Yay! It’s finally time to start pulling together your shot list and saving all of those dreamy inspiration photos for your wedding day. I can’t tell you how many couples send me beautiful candid images they’ve found on Pinterest. You know the ones. The big laughs during toasts. The happy tears during vows. That just-married glow walking back down the aisle.
And for good reason. Those are the photos everyone wants!
But here’s something important to know. Those moments are rarely planned. And when they are overly planned, they almost never feel as authentic as the original.
So how do you actually get those natural, emotional, Pinterest-worthy wedding photos?
It starts with feeling comfortable in front of the camera.
As your wedding photographer, I’m there to capture everything. The emotional moments. The hand holds. The deep breath before you walk down the aisle. But those photos don’t happen when you’re thinking about where to put your hands or whether your smile looks awkward. Your only job on your wedding day is to live it!
When you are fully present and focused on your spouse instead of the camera, the emotions come naturally. That is where candid wedding photography really shines.
If you are hoping for natural wedding photos that feel effortless and real, trust and comfort are everything.
If you are nervous about being in front of the camera, you are not alone. Almost every couple feels this way, especially grooms. Most men are not used to professional photos, and that is completely okay.
The good news is you do not need to know how to pose perfectly. You just need to feel relaxed enough to be yourselves.
Here are a few simple wedding photography tips to help you feel more natural on your big day.
This is one of the most important decisions you will make.
Your photographer is with you for nearly your entire wedding day. You want someone who feels like a calming presence, not someone who makes you feel stiff or self-conscious. Meet with them before booking. Have a conversation. Make sure your personalities align.
When you trust your photographer, you stop worrying about whether they are getting the shot. That trust allows you to stay present, and that presence creates authentic photos.
An engagement session is more than just pretty photos for your save-the-dates. It is practice for your wedding day!
This is where you learn how your photographer gives direction and how natural movement feels on camera. You will quickly realize that you are not expected to stand stiffly and smile the whole time. Most of the time, I am prompting couples to walk, talk, laugh, and interact naturally.
By the time your wedding day arrives, you will already feel familiar and confident.
This might be the simplest advice, but it makes the biggest difference.
Your wedding day is about celebrating your marriage. It is not about performing for photos. During your ceremony, hold hands. During speeches, lean into each other. Whisper something funny during portraits. Let yourself feel whatever comes up.
The best candid wedding photos happen when you forget the camera is even there!
Rushing is one of the fastest ways to feel tense in photos. When your wedding day photography timeline has breathing room built in, you can actually enjoy the process.
A well-planned timeline allows time for natural moments to unfold. It gives space for laughter, happy tears, and genuine connection instead of hurried poses.
The secret is not copying a viral Pinterest pose. It is being fully present in your own day!
When you trust your photographer, schedule an engagement session, build a thoughtful timeline, and focus on your spouse, the beautiful candid moments happen naturally. They do not feel forced. They do not feel staged. They feel like you!
That is what wedding photography is about!
